Belvoir Ridge Creamery

Alan & Jane Hewson from Crossroads Farm in Eastwell farm free draining red land that until 1960 was an ironstone quarry.  To build the fertility of the soil they grow pastures of mixed grasses & herbs, including clovers, chicory, yarrow and plantain, and graze with their dual purpose (milking/meat) herd of Native Red Polls.

Unusually the cows keep their calves until they are naturally ready for weaning. Since 2017 the dairy cows and calves have been mob grazed, and Alan & Jane plan to extend this to all livestock in 2018.

Belvoir Ridge, the farm's dairy, has been selling raw and pasteurised milk for some years, and since 2013 has also been creating and selling local cheeses. The cows have been exclusively pasture-fed since 2015.

The produce has won many awards including Champion Milk in Show, Nantwich @icheeseawards2014, plus gold for Rutland Slipcote (a white mould ripened cheese) 2015 & silver for Colwick Cheese 2015.

The Artisan Cheese Fair which is held in Melton Mowbray on the first bank holiday of May (Saturday & Sunday) is a great time for Alan & Jane to meet many customers. Rutland Slipcote was voted people’s choice cheese 2016, with over 50 Artisan Cheesemakers represented.

Colwick Cheese is registered with Slow Food as a ‘Forgotten Food’ and was taken to Slow Cheese in Italy in 2017.

Products are available in the Nottingham & Leicester area, including at the Food Assembly in Nottingham.  Milk and cream are also supplied to Gelato village in Leicester for making prize winning gelato.

Pasture For Life milk is supplied from Belvoir Ridge to Hambleton Hall, Hambleton Bakery & Harts Restaurant, Nottingham and the Small Food Bakery in Nottingham.

Alternatively, products are available on farm 7 days a week, with a milk vending machine (bring your own container) or buy a reusable one for £2.
