Why did you join Pasture for Life?/What about the Pasture fed movement are you enthusiastic about?

I was introduced to pasture for life in 2016, when I was desperately looking for a way to improve my farm. We had been through a terrible year, bad calving, soil running off from the steep hillside and costs were steadily rising, I didn’t know what to do. Luckily I took the plunge and signed up to PfL.

The forum was a eye opener, advice offered without judgement, my worst land seen as my best (the knapweed wasn’t a weed after all!) and I took the advice offered, trialing ‘moving the cows before they finished up a field’ and ‘feeding only hay in the winter‘ instead of sugar beet and grain with straw… (yes I know!) 

It worked. My soil improved, my cows health improved, and my input costs shrank, and I was never made to feel stupid for asking for help. 

And that’s what I love about Pasture for Life, it’s so non-judgemental. You ask for help and get it!

What are you excited about for 2023?

As this is a new role for me I am excited to be part of Pasture for Life and look forward to getting to know the southwest membership, running events and working with farmers to get our message out to a wider audience.
