Overview

Boscarnon Farm, located in the heathland above Coverack is owned and farmed by Andy and Emma Tylor. They took over the reins of the farm over 10 years ago, starting out with the purchase of a small family group of pedigree red ruby devon cows and youngsters from a retiring farmer. With the addition of James Williams (Devon Cattle Breed Society Chairman) super bull ‘The Brigadier’ the herd soon grew to the size it is today.

The cattle graze cliffs and ancient fields overlooking Coverack Bay for most of the year, only going to a shed and ‘out paddock?’ for the wettest winter months.  Here they continue to eat grass in its haylage/silage form.

Careful selection of breeding qualities is paying off today as an on farm butchery unit has now been added to the enterprise and the animals provide the meat they sell. The cattle only need to leave the farm once, either for slaughter and return to the butchery, or to be sold as young bulls and heifers for breeding. As much of the animal is used as possible, even including turning some of the best skins into wonderful rugs, which are for sale when available.

Alongside the farm they also run their agricultural contracting business specialising in stock fencing and handling systems in conservation areas. They have an interest in sustainable farming practices particularly in relation to conservation of habitats and soils. Although the farm is not certified organic, they certainly farm organically, only using manure, seaweed and sea minerals on the land. The cattle obtain their nutrition and minerals from the variety of forage within the habitats they graze and also have access to Himalayan rock salt and dried seaweed in the winter. Consequently the cattle have beautifully dark red shiny coats which get sent to Italy for tanning and come back as wonderful rugs which can also be purchased when available
