Cleeve Common Board of Conservators

Our herd of 45 steers is essential for managing the 1000 acre Site of Special Scientific Interest. The land the cattle graze on is Gloucestershire's largest Common, Cleeve Common. It is within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, has the highest tree growing in the Cotswolds, three ancient scheduled monuments and numerous rare plants, especially orchids and limestone flowers. The herd is owned by the charity the Cleeve Common Board of Conservators and the cattle are managed by David our fantastic ranger who spends lots of time every day looking for the 45 cattle across the 1000 acre reserve, often to find them lying down relaxing in the gorse bushes or enjoying the woodland shade of the butterfly reserve alongside rare butterflies like the Duke of Burgundy. When you buy our beef 100% of the income goes to the charity to help manage rare species- who knew eating beef could be SO ethically sound!
All our stock is bought from the National Trust's Cotswold herd, so calves are born and reared on conservation land a few miles away. They stay with us until atleast 36 months of age. The cattle have very little intervention, they are fed hay daily when the winter is harsh, but otherwise, they are allowed to just be, free roaming, natural, healthy and happy as we believe they should be.
The meat is simply delicious, a true representative of well bred native cattle, raised purely on flower rich pasture that has NEVER received any sprays, chemicals, fertilisers. The cattle truly lead stress free lives and are much loved by everyone. The Common is open every day for you to visit and see for yourself! The proof of the Galloway's lifestyle and care is in the quality of the meat, so please support our charity and conservation by buying our beef!
