Bill Wiggin MP is new PFLA chairman
Mr. Wiggin has been the Member of Parliament for North Herefordshire since 2001 and has been breeding Hereford Cattle for 12 years. He currently runs a herd of 20 suckler cows and heifers at his farm in Upton Bishop, near Ross on Wye, Herefordshire.
“I welcome the opportunity to join a group of innovative farmers who are producing high quality food in a truly sustainable way,” says Mr. Wiggin.
“Feeding cattle and sheep just on pasture, is something I truly believe in. I want to help more farmers garner the many and varied benefits of grass feeding their animals.
“I am excited about joining the PFLA as we move away from the Common Agricultural Policy, towards farming that delivers more public goods,” says Mr. Wiggin. “This is the perfect time to take the organisations certification mark ‘Pasture for Life’ forward, to raise its profile and broaden its appeal to consumers as the healthy meat and dairy option.
Over the past few months, Mr. Wiggin has visited several Pasture for Life members to see how they farm.
“I have met some incredible producers working with nature, building their soils, rearing healthy, happy animals and enhancing the environment, while still producing excellent tasting food which makes them a profit.
“It is win, win, win. What we have to do is make sure all of our members see the value the PFLA is adding to their produce.”
PFLA vice-chairman Fidelity Weston says of Mr. Wiggin’s appointment:
“This is a great opportunity for us to have a sitting MP as our chairman and we welcome Bill whole-heartedly to our Board.
“He will be our voice in Parliament at this crucial stage in the formation of new agricultural policy, and will help us in our forthcoming lobbying and consumer campaigns.
“We are looking forward to the new leadership Bill will offer us, supported by our small team in the office and our panel of committed directors.
“I am confident that together, we can take the PFLA productively and successfully forward over the coming years.”
The position, which is not remunerated, starts with immediate effect and will last for at least three years.
