We’re hiring! We’re looking for a Communications Manager.
The Pasture-Fed Livestock Association (PFLA) is a leading non-profit organisation in the British Isles championing the regenerative role of ruminant animals (cattle, sheep, goats etc) and the grazed pastures and habitats that evolved alongside them. In doing so, the PFLA plays a central role in the debate around what constitutes a sustainable food and farming system in a UK striving for both net zero and biodiversity recovery.
Specifically, the PFLA promotes the benefits of raising these animals wholly from pasture and seeks to demonstrate that this brings the maximum positive impact in terms of ecological, animal and human health. These farming practices are underpinned by the Pasture for Life certification standard, developed by the PFLA, that ensures certified farmers have a voice in the food marketplace.
In order to capitalise on the growing interest in pasture-fed ruminants from policy-makers, academia, the food & farming community and general public, the PFLA is looking for a day-to-day Communications Manager to build out our core capability.
This new role will suit an individual who has strong experience in marketing and/or communications but is still looking to learn and develop their skills, and who wants to make a name for themselves by working in a purpose-driven role. We are particularly looking for someone who has a keen eye on consumer facing communications and an ability to present potentially complex information into a succinct and easily accessible format suitable for a wide range of non-experts.
- Day-to-day communications and website
- Communicate the role and activity of the PFLA to the food and farming community, external stakeholders and wider public
- Deliver on the basics of our multi-channel communications strategy, including social, email and event communications
- Enhance and refine this strategy with the help of the wider team, including our two experienced communications advisors
- Develop strong relationships with Pasture for Life farmers, communicating their story to the UK and beyond
- Maintain and develop the PFLA’s relationships with the consumer press and driving engagement from this group
- Assist in an ongoing website design and development project
- Manage the front-facing website on a day-to-day level and ensure it is kept up to date, liaising with team members on content and third parties on development
- Report regularly on activity using benchmark and bespoke metrics
Policy and Campaigns
- Assist in shaping PFLA policy development including the drafting of position pieces and responses to external reports, such as the National Food Strategy
- Represent the PFLA in external groups made up of partner organisations and/or external stakeholders
- Maintain and develop relationships with other communications teams across the food, farming and NGO community to seek collaborations and shared positions on key issues
- Lead on any campaigning the PFLA is involved with, whether it is led by the PFLA or partner organisations
Skills and Experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills
- Well-developed professional skills, including Google Workspace and Microsoft Office
- Experience of major social media platforms
- Knowledge and interest in using data to drive decision-making, inform stakeholders and drive engagement such as Google Analytics and other social media analytics
- Familiarity with best practice in email marketing and ideally experience of MailChimp
- Familiarity with website CMS such as WordPress
- Used to working with consumer content, campaigns and engagement
- Experience working in the food & farming or conservation sectors
- Effective use of visual editing and simple design tools
- Experience of social media scheduling tools
- Prior involvement in website development
- Prior involvement in national campaigns
- Ability to create compelling presentation decks
- Possible social influencer or blogger in own sphere and aware of best practice when publishing for an organisation vs self
- Well versed in and passionate about mainstream digital platforms as solutions to productivity, communication and marketing

We are looking for a full time position, however, we can be flexible down to four days per week for the right candidate.
The salary will be in the region of £35k FTE, again with room for flexibility for the right candidate.
The PFLA is a nationwide organisation and its active Directors, volunteers, and current staff members work from home so the Communications Manager will be expected to make their own working arrangements. A computer will be provided, if needed. Team communications are currently held through Zoom and other media, with occasional face-to-face meetings. The successful applicant will be expected to travel for which expenses may be claimed. They will need to be able to work on their own, but also to communicate effectively with the wider PFLA team, ensuring everyone is pulling together in the same direction.
