Upper Leigh Farm
Upper Leigh Farm has been owned and managed by Nat and Katie Page since 1995, and became fully organic (Soil Association) in 1997. In 2020 we became PFLA certified as producers and direct sellers of 100% pasture-fed beef.
Upper Leigh is an all-grass farm, 160 acres of permanent pasture and meadow rich in grass and herb species, divided into 16 fields by miles of ancient hedges. It supports a breeding herd of 40 South Devon cattle, in the process of pedigree registration. We have fed only farm grass or farm-grown hay and silage since 2005 - no feed is bought in, no grain is fed.
Cattle are all born on the farm, and never leave the farm until sold as stores or killed for top-quality meat.
We sell meat direct from the farm, butchered and vacuum-packed expertly by Blackmore Vale family butchery.
The cattle out at summer grazing. The cattle graze outside on rich pastures at least 7 months of the year, so ensuring healthy cattle and healthy soils. The herd is regularly moved form field to field, offering fresh grazing for the cattle, and leaving tussocks of higher grass in the fields which are good cover for invertebrates and allow natural re-seeding of a good mixture of grass and herb species.
The farm shop is next to the 16th century barn.
The medieval barn has buttressed stone walls and a cruck-framed roof of five bays. Beef buyers are welcome to inspect the farm buildings and the herd.
The herb- and flower-rich pastures are key to maintaining healthy and naturally productive soils; healthy livestock that seldom need any veterinary treatment; and beef that is not only tasty, but is also very good for human health as it is rich in beneficial elements.
