Keep on top of dynamic parasite challenges this summer
Parasites will be altering their behaviours – have you changed yours to counteract?
The changes in recent weather patterns pose challenges for livestock farming and no more
so than in the control of parasites. Nematodirus is now common in autumn as well as the
spring, and youngstock often experience high worm burdens over winter instead of the
expected mid-summer period. Heamonchus, or Barbers Pole worm, is now increasingly seen
across the UK, with outbreaks occurring earlier in the year, demanding vigilant monitoring
and timely intervention.
As a Pasture for Life member, balancing reduced chemical interventions for parasites is
essential but complex. Implementing sustainable farming practices requires careful
consideration of parasite control methods. Untreated parasite challenges can lead to
performance loss and multiple treatments later to rectify a problem, negating efforts to
reduce wormer use.
It is crucial to monitor the situation with regular faecal egg counts and seek appropriate
advice from experts. Staying informed about effective parasite management can help
maintain livestock health and productivity. Check our special offer for PfL members in this
newsletter to support your efforts in managing these emerging challenges.
